HOA Derby Day 2014
The 2014 Derby Day was held on Saturday May 3rd, 2014! Unlike 2013, the day was fabulous with temperatures in the low seventies and a morning breeze that diminished throughout the day! According the President, Randy Snyder, the only "let down" was the number of attendees at 46!
Dick McCallum, VP Communications handled the emcee job with "grace and ease" and made announcements and intros throughout the event which ran from 3PM until the final drawings, after the Kentucky Derby at 7PM. Randy was the "color commentator" for the Lake Lure Men's and Women's derby.
As usual participants were brave, hearty souls upholding the attributes of good sports. Ladies' race winners, were Patti Shcroder riding Patti Cakes and Husband John Schroder riding Ocean Muffin, making the winners a "family affair!" Win, place and show winners were awarded gift certificates courtesy of Rumbling Bald Resort! Randy "Rowdy" broadcast the race? on 7777.7 AM, the home of "WHOA" where Pat Boone Music is played 24/7 and wildcat and bear sightings and locations are broadcast throughout the day. However, with only five watts of transmitting power, the station cannot be heard from more than 100 feet from the location on Winesap Boulevard! The races did not disappoint and by all counts, were the most exciting 10 to 15 minutes in sports in Lake Lure?
Finally, the drawing was held for all six (win, place and show) ticket picks by the winners and cash prizes going to the lucky holders of the six tickets drawn. The Ladies' bonnet parade was in gay splendor with an amazing array of bonnets and accompanying outfits by approximately 25 lovely attendees! Winners selected by a panel of judges were, Diane Barrett for the most elegant, Barbi Snyder, the funniest and Mabel Satrape, the most creative. As in the Lake Lure Derby, the winners were presented with gift certificates, courtesy of Rumbling Bald Resort.
The 140th Kentucky Derby was a thriller right to the finish line and ended in a close finish as California Chrome took the winning slot by a nose. Again the win, place and show drawings awarded the three winning ticket holders with cash prizes! Last, at about 6:40PM drawings were held and the winning ticket holders (eight) received beautiful knockout rose bushes that were the centerpieces for the event! Although attendance was light, the crowd was not disappointed with the races, the prizes, the buffet and of course, the tasty mint juleps!
The members of the Programs Committee attending, Patti Schroder, Yvonne Cooley, Nancy McNary, Pat Whitaker, Linda Jowers, and Dale Adams did a marvelous job assisting Randy and Dick to put together another unforgettable and entertaining event, upholding the theme of "fun, entertaining events with great food at a great value" for their members!
